Following my recent reviews of the Champions League and Europa League, here is an analysis of the 2021/22 revenue distribution for the Europa Conference. This was the first season for UEFA’s newest competition and the earnings are not as well known as the other two more established tournaments, so hopefully this explanation is of some use.
Total Revenue
The first thing to say is that the potential earnings are significantly lower in the Europa Conference, but the income can still make a difference to clubs, especially those from smaller countries.
In fact, only four clubs from the Big Six leagues featured in the 32 clubs in the 2021/22 Europa Conference group stage, namely Roma (Italy), Tottenham Hotspur (England), Rennes (France) and Union Berlin (Germany).
Spain did not have any team qualify, as the team which would have participated, Villarreal, won the 2020/21 Europa League, thus securing a place in the Champions League. Both Portuguese representatives were eliminated in the play-offs.
The two finalists were the only clubs in the Europa Conference to earn more than €10m. The winners Roma led the way with €19.2m, followed by the runners-up Feyenoord with €14.3m. Then came three clubs with €9.5m: Tottenham, Bodo/Glimt and PAOK.
Even though Tottenham failed to get out of the group, they benefited from a relatively high TV pool payment, as did Bodo/Glimt. In contrast, PAOK were boosted by their UEFA coefficient.
