Now that all the accounts for Premier League clubs have been published for the 2021/22 season, I thought that it might be interesting to look at the trends in the over the last 10 years.

Obviously, the COVID pandemic had a significant impact on 2019/20 and especially the 2020/21 season, when virtually all games were played behind closed doors, but 2021/22 was pretty much back to normal.

Profit/(Loss)

The Premier League’s loss before tax continued to recover from the huge losses reported during the COVID seasons of £992m in 2020 and £689m in 2021 to £598m in 2022.

However, this was still a sizeable loss compared to other years. It is true that the division was already loss-making in 2019, but it had reported profits in four of the preceding five years, amounting to £1.3 bln in this period.

Tax usually does not have that big an impact on the bottom line for football clubs, which was certainly the case in 2022, where there was a net £33m tax credit in the whole Premier League.
